Ellen Reid Writing Award
The Ellen Reid Writing Award is given each year to support a UCSB student pursuing a career that involves writing or publishing. The award was established by Doug and Irene Fogelson to honor the legacy of Ellen Reid, Santa Barbara’s “book shepherd.” Ms. Reid was an award-winning writer and a consultant to independent authors for many years. The award continues her passion for guiding beginning writers by providing a scholarship of $2,500 to an undergraduate student in the Professional Writing Minor. Two honorable mention awards of $500 each will also be given.
Minor students interested in applying will submit a résumé, one sample piece of their writing, and a short essay response to this prompt: Please explain how you envision writing to be an important part of your prospective career and your life after graduation. A panel of Writing Program faculty will judge the applications and the award will be announced at the beginning of spring quarter.
If you are receiving financial aid, this award could impact your financial aid status. Please consult with your financial aid officer before applying for the award.
First-Generation Scholarship
A former Professional Writing Minor has provided a gift to the Writing Program to support first-generation students in the Minor. This gift funds two scholarships of $1000 each year.
First-generation students (the first in their immediate family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from a 4-year university) the Minor who are interested in applying will submit a résumé and a short response (no more than 300 words) to this prompt: How has writing contributed to your success as a first-generation student in academic, professional, and/or community contexts? A panel of Writing Program faculty will judge the applications, and the awards will be announced early in the spring quarter.
If you are receiving financial aid, this award could impact your financial aid status. Please consult with your financial aid officer before applying for the award.
